If you're seeking an authentic taste of Eastern North Carolina barbecue, Skylight Inn BBQ in Ayden, NC, is a must-visit destination that has proudly upheld its legacy since 1947. This iconic barbecue restaurant serves up a celebration of traditional wood-cooked whole hog barbecue, distinguished by the perfect marriage of smoky meat and crispy skin, delivering flavor layers that ignite your palate with every bite.
The menu is a carnivore’s paradise, spotlighting specialties like the Chopped Whole Hog and the Wood Cooked Whole Hog BBQ Tray, both accompanied by classic Southern sides such as tangy coleslaw, sweet cornbread, and savory baked beans. For those who appreciate variety, the BBQ & Chicken Combo offers a delightful blend of tender, smoky pulled pork with juicy, perfectly seasoned chicken quarters. Don’t miss the small and large chicken plates for a hearty, satisfying meal.
The magic doesn't stop at the meat. Skylight Inn’s concoctions of sauces are crafted with care, complementing rather than overpowering the smoky, rich pork. The side dishes, especially the baked beans and slaw, balance the smoky meat with refreshing and comforting flavors. When it’s time for dessert, the classic Banana Pudding and house-made Nanna Pudding provide a nostalgic, creamy sweetness that feels like a warm hug—comfort food at its finest.
The dining atmosphere echoes its historical roots, featuring a simple yet charming counterservice setup housed in a building topped with a distinct Capitol dome—a beacon of BBQ heritage that's hard to miss as you drive through Ayden. The walls are adorned with photos and memorabilia, giving guests a sense of history as they savor each bite. Customers often note the friendly, attentive staff who serve up quick and courteous service, rounding out a genuinely welcoming experience that feels like a culinary homecoming.
The real draw here is the unmistakable smoky flavor combined with the unmistakable Eastern NC tradition of using whole hog, where each part of the pig—from the lean meat to the crispy skin—is celebrated. Fans like Mark Roper rave about how the skin mixed in enriches the texture and taste, calling it a “special treat.” First-timers consistently find themselves coming back for more, with Pooh Bear calling it “chef's kiss” perfection, especially praising the banana pudding as “top tier.”
Whether you’re a local or willing to travel miles like Robert Kerns, who rode his motorcycle 75 miles to indulge in the delicious dark meat chicken plate, Skylight Inn BBQ offers an experience that is truly worth the journey. Even on a quick stop before closing, visitors appreciate the friendly environment and the quick service, as noted by Tiffany Garces Mulliken. Despite a few occasional menu shortages like chicken running out during Blayz Brooks’ visit, the quality of pork more than compensates.
In essence, Skylight Inn BBQ provides a deep connection to traditional Eastern North Carolina barbecue with flavors that resonate and linger. Whether you’re craving tender smoked pork, smoky chicken, fresh sides, or a slice of moist cake with sweet tea, this landmark embodies BBQ culture with true heart and soul.

I’m a BBQ fanatic! From Kyle Fletchers(Belmont NC) Red Bridges ( Shelby NC) Ray Nathan’s ( Gastonia NC) Grand Daddy’s ( Gaffney SC) this BBQ was as advertised, the skin mixed in the meat provides a special treat, the slaw went well with the meat, the baked beans were amazing, potato salad, cornbread, they even had fountain diet Mtn Dew. I drove 4 hrs to try this landmark restaurant. If you are near by do yourself a favor and try The Skylight Inn.
Visited Skylight Inn BBQ in Ayden, NC yesterday — a true Eastern NC BBQ landmark that’s been around since 1947. The building with the Capitol dome is hard to miss, and inside you’ll find a simple, old-school counter-service setup with a wall full of history and photos. I was a little disappointed they were out of chicken during my visit, but the pork more than made up for it. Tender, smoky, and chopped just right, with that signature Eastern NC vinegar tang. The slaw was crisp and refreshing, and the cornbread was a nice touch. Picked up bottles of both the Skylight Inn Eastern NC style sauce and the Sam Jones sweet BBQ sauce to take home — both are excellent. If you’re anywhere near Eastern NC, this is a must-visit BBQ spot. Just arrive early if you want more menu variety, especially the chicken.
Came in about 45min to closing planning on a quick bite as we passed through. Employees were very kind, the gentleman working the register was great. Food was okay.. honestly expected much better based on reviews, and likely wouldnt be back, but 4 stars because they were nice and the food came out quick
Loved it and the simplicity! BBQ was how bbq should be,not overpowered with sauces. You taste the meat and the skin in it was chef's kiss! The banana pudding is top tier just like grandma's, and you don't find it made like that anymore! I couldn't pass on the skins which were awesome! First time there and I will be back! Highly recommend!
I rode my motorcycle 75 miles to get this BBQ. If that is not enough support of this restaurant I don’t know what else to tell you. I got the large chicken plate with dark meat and it was delicious. The slaw and Mac and cheese as a side dish wax amazing. I am looking forward to coming back again and bringing friends and family.
This landmark lives up to itsreputation. Everything was great. The staff is friendly and our food was delicious. We loved the cornbread. The cracklins in the q were bursts of flavor. Don't get so focused on the pork that you miss the chicken. It completes the experience. Glad I got to come. Well worth the trip.
I was informed this was the best BBQ in all of NC. I had their pulled pork sandwich. It changed my life. With or without sauce, every bite was tasty and juicy. This will be another place I'll have to visit once a month to try everything on their menu. Cannot wait. It is 08/09/2025 and I had the chicken. Blown away!
The bbq is finely chopped and flavorful. The bbq beans have pieces of bbq and that gives it a real unique flavor. The coleslaw and cornbread are both excellent.
